Charterhouse World War I Memorial

Welcome to the Charterhouse Roll of Honour, a website commemorating all those Old Carthusians and members of staff who perished in the First World War. Some 3,500 OCs served in the armed forces, of whom nearly 700 are known to have died. This website includes a brief biography of each casualty, photographs of individuals and of graves, archive resources, and details of the Charterhouse War Memorial Chapel, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.

We are grateful to all those who have contributed to the Roll of Honour, particularly Dr Eric Webb, who has researched biographical notes for each individual. Old Carthusian war graves across the world have been visited and photographed by a large team of OCs, Carthusians, parents and friends as part of Charterhouse’s First World War centenary commemorations, and we would particularly like to thank Tom Pearson-Chisman for his invaluable support with the graves project. Digitisation of the School magazines and photograph albums was made possible by generous funding from the Carthusian Society.
